What to Expect During A Laser Session
Laser Therapy used in Veterinary Medicine
Lasers used in veterinary medicine are classified as Class III or Class IV therapeutic lasers. They emit light in the near-infrared spectrum, allowing the light to penetrate deeper into tissue compared to visible light. Power output is typically between 100-500 milliwatts. The light is delivered as a focused, narrow beam or as a wider scatter beam depending on the treatment area and condition being addressed. We use Class IV Laser at Holistic Harmony.
During each session, Dr. Shah or a certified veterinary nurse, will slowly and methodically move the handheld laser probe over the affected area, delivering the therapeutic light to the cells underneath. The beam is invisible, and the procedure is completely painless and non-invasive. Pets will simply relax or rest during their treatments.
Laser Therapy for Pets
Laser therapy is a gentle, non-invasive treatment that doesn’t require anesthesia, sedation, or any form of restraint. Most pets remain calm and relaxed—many even sit or lie comfortably throughout the session.
During treatment, a small handheld probe is placed directly on the skin or held slightly above the area being treated. The laser’s power level is carefully adjusted and guided in specific motions or patterns to reach the targeted tissues effectively.
Because laser therapy stimulates circulation, pets may feel a pleasant warmth in the treated area, but there is no pain, burning, or electrical sensation. It’s a soothing process that most pets tolerate very well.
Treatment frequency depends on your pet’s condition. At first, sessions are often scheduled two to three times per week for several weeks. As healing progresses and pain subsides, visits are typically reduced to once a week or less.
The effects of laser therapy build over time—each session enhances tissue repair and reduces inflammation. You’ll often notice your pet becoming more active and mobile as discomfort diminishes.
Some pets respond quickly and show improvement right after the first few sessions, while others experience gradual relief depending on the severity of arthritis, injury, or chronic pain. Dr. Shah will guide you on what results to expect for your pet’s specific situation.
